UmbertoRobina,
During Season Three and continuing throughout Season Four, the ratings for ALF TV Seiries were falling, due to mistakes made by both NBC and Alien Productions. Also, toward the end of Season Four there were several published stories of actors discontent with the long hours, and difficult conditions involved in taping the show.
At least a month prior to airdate ending of Season Four there were published reports starting to leak information of serious contract talks underway between NBC and Alien Productions about major changes desired by both sides for Season Five. Throughout the Summer hiatus, bits and pieces of published information appeared noting that contract negotiations were ongoing concerning the ALF Tv series. Some of the reports even hinted possibilty of the series ending if differences between the parties could not be resolved; however, these reports noted that, under a "worst case scenario", NBC would back production by Alien Productions of a special or TV movie to offer satisfactory conclusion to the storyline.
Unfortunately, just weeks prior to start of Fall Season, NBC announced that ALF had been dropped from scheduled lineup of shows, without offering any further details. No special or TV movie ending the ALF storyline ever appeared on NBC, and we fast forward to six years later when "Project: ALf" TV movie is aired on ABC.
Needless to say, the unexpected ending of the ALF TV series was a traumatic event for all (both children and adults).
Mike

okay, I understand, but still what an ending man!
even for a season finale instead of a series finale, it's pretty crappy.
I mean the way they ended it, season 5 would have probably sucked I think, because you change the whole setting, and storyline by ending it that way,and they would probably have to do something really drastic in order for things to return to the way they were. But I guess we were lucky that they ended it the way they did, because it would have turned into another A-Team. During it's final season they broke away from the typical storyline, and had them working for the government, and it just wasn't the same, so the show saw it's demise.
I think that's the direction Alf was heading into. Thank god it didn't. Could you imagine season 5 consisting of Alf living in a place like he did in Project:Alf, in some military cage or cell so to speak? Would you laugh? I sure as heck wouldn't. It wouldn't be funny one bit. No Kate, Willie, Brian or Eric. I think it would have sucked to say the least.
So I guess we're lucky it ended when it did.
