the 1990 anti-drug special

Post by Chris Fulmer »

Who saw this one. It combined all the big Saturday morning characters at the time (and was presented commercial free by ROnald McDonald Children's Charities). Alf popped up a couple of times ("WRONG!!! Five yard penalty on the play!" I can remember him shouting at one point in response to an incorrect answer by the main character). Anyone know where I might find this?

Chris Fulmer,

I do not recall a show with the specifics you mention, but is it possible you might be thinking of "ALF LOVES A MYSTERY' which was a Saturday morning special hosted by ALF that promoted NBC's new lineup of Saturday morning shows?

No, that wasn't it. This one used characters from all the networks and was aired simultaneously by all of them. Also makeing appearances, among others, were the Smurfs, the Turtles (well, at least Michaelangelo, anyway), Bugs and Daffy, Pooh, Garfield, and perhaps Slimer, I'm not 100% sure.

The show you describe (including ALF) sounds way cool. Sorry I missed it.

I'm sorry I missed it too (then again, I was pretty young at the time) - I'd love to see it! I'm pretty sure it'll pop up somewhere one of these years where we'll all be able to watch it.

DAMN! I just remembered something, and I think it's the cartoon you're talking about! I saw it when I was very young, it was on swedish television We even got to see it in SCHOOL! So this was a big campain. Are you referring to the one where a kid pulls out a box from under his bed with a joint in it? And then all these cartoon characters tries to convince him that taking drugs is wrong?I think I have this recorded on one of my old cartoon-tapes! :)

Yes, that's exactly it. If my memory serves me correctly, the title was simply to the extent of "Cartoon Stars to the Rescue" or something along those lines (it may have been titled differently in translation to other countries). If I remember, Alf at one point blackmails a laconic (as usual) Garfield into assiting with the anti-drug effort by threatening to have him for breakfast (by having him for breakfast, of course) if he didn't, which not surpringly got Garfield into the Just Say No spirit.

Yepp, that's pretty much the correct title, just checked it out on imdb.com :)

OK, then we're talking about the same one, wish I knew where I have it recorded! :(

Oh, thanks! You totally reminded me about this!

About a week ago or two, I decided to look up if I had this recorded on some of my old cartoon tapes, cause I know I once had. But I have over 50 tapes filled with stuff, and the label only says "ape nr 1.." and so on.
So, after browsing about 20 tapes, I finally found it!! It was a qonderful flashback, as I had not seen it in about 14 years!!

Yup, that's it. The name is "Cartoon All-Stars to the Rescue". Hey, ALF is the one that finally convinces him not to do drugs! :) Does anyone know where I could get a hold of the tape (if there is one)?

I might have this on tape somewhere. I will try to find it. I had totally forgotten about ALF being in that special. Now that I think about it, I think I watched and hoped for some explaination as to what happened to ALF in the last episode of the sitcom. As I recall, the special aired not too long after the final episode aired. At least it did in my area.

I'll see if I can find it.

I haven't seen it, but i've heard of it. Was it "Cartoon All-stars to the Rescue"? I think it wasn't ever shown on tv after its first airing because of legal issues with the Garfield character. :D

This was my all timne favorite VHS when I was a kid. My mom told me that she wanted to buy a copy for my school to show the little kids, but their policy was to simply pretend that drugs did not exist, as opposed to taking a direct approach.

Seeing all those childhood stars on one tape was (and still is) amazing. I've got it on my iPod.

On another note, I showed this tape to a friend of mine while he was stoned off of his ass, to which he replied 'Shut this off! My childhood is puking all over the screen.' Maybe thats more funny to me, than it would be to someone reading this now that I think of it ....

Yeah this was an amazing movie to me as a kid. All I remember now is something about the brother stealing money from his sister's piggy bank to buy drugs, and then the end where all the cartoon characters are in the theme park, pretty much scaring the brother to get him to quitting.

It seemed like virtually ever cartoon I could think of was in it (maybe not the Disney though... I can't remember). It looks like the google link still works one year later (thanks Delorean Dude 17), I'll have to take a look at it. Only 32 min? Seemed so much longer when I was a kid.
