They should do puppet like original for closeups but then computer animation for action scenes.

I know in the one article I believe it said something about the movie being a "hybrid". That leads me to believe you are right, and that they just know audiences today would laugh (not in a good way), at a person in a suit running around. I'll admit, it'd be a bit disappointing if we didn't see ALF in puppet form at all.
