Problems playing Defender of Earth on Mac

Post by Melmac98 »

Hi y'all!
So I am having problems downloading the ALF games to my Mac. If this makes any difference, it is an early 09 white MacBook running OS X 10.9.1 (Mavericks), and I've tried using Firefox 24-27 and Safari 7. It prompts me for a password in Firefox, and says I don't have permission to access the files in Safari. What gives?? Is this an issue with Macs or Mavericks or something? You'd think ALF would especially want his games to be played on a Mac! Should I use a different browser or something? I also tried control-clicking and saying to download the linked file, didn't work; same problems.

UPDATE:
I broke down and downloaded the games from other reputable sites, but now I am having problems playing Defender of Earth: it's saying I don't have enough memory. I have 4GB of memory, and that game is from when computers had that much storage!! I am using the Windows emulator Wine to run it, if that helps (no, I am not dual-booting with Windows. I don't want to put much money into my current Mac). If you could help, that would be great.

I think it depends on what website you are downloading them from. Some sites require a registration for a user name and password. Be careful to research whether a site is reputable before giving them your email or any other personal information, because some of these supposed sites are used to phish information or to spread viruses or adware.

I'm trying to download them from the Games page here. And good for you for knowing Macs get viruses!

Oh wow. I didn't know there was a games download page on this site! You may want to send a message to Admin to ask about that.

I don't know if I would count on being able to run "Defender of Earth" on a Mac. We had enough trouble getting it to work on Windows!

The game was written around 2000 (we think), and is playable on Windows XP. It will not play on Windows 7 unless you have Windows 7 Professional and install Windows XP mode and Virtual PC. The full conversation about this is here viewtopic.php?f=28&t=2143&p=18122&hilit=defender#p18122

That being said, there may possibly be some sort of emulator that would make this playable on a Mac, but since I am not a Mac person, I would have no idea what to tell you.
