Maybe they "stretched" out the episdoes so they could reach the 100+ mark for syndication purposes, although there are exceptions ( tv shows with fewer episodes that have been syndicated).

Seasons 1 and 2 are the best IMO. The rest of the seasons were funny too, but definitely not as good. The first had more original scripts (the Melmacian cockroach, the hiccups), plus the concept was fresh and new.

I was born in '88, so obviously I didn't watch the first 2 seasons, but I must've watched the last 2 since my parents where big ALF fans. There's actually a pic of my mom carrying me as a newborn and she's wearing an ALF t-shirt! Pretty cool
